Equal Pay Day Celebration
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
Jackson Business & Professional Women announces that a dual
celebration will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. The annual Equal Pay Day
Event will begin at 11:00 a.m. An Equal Pay Day Joint Proclamation from the City
of Jackson and the County of Madison will be read by Mayor Jerry Gist at his
office at City Hall, followed by a celebration at The Baker’s Rack. Jackson BPW
celebrates the 90th anniversary of its founding in April, 2009. The Chamber of
Commerce Redcoats will attend at The Baker’s Rack at noon and will perform a
ribbon cutting in honor of the celebration. A Dutch treat lunch follows with a
great big birthday cake.
Beth Bates, Chair of the Jackson BPW Equal Pay Day Event states: “In 1963, the
year the Equal Pay Act was passed, women were paid an average of 59 cents for
every dollar paid to men. Today, women have progressed to 78 cents on the dollar
-- an increase of not quite half a penny per year for 45 years. And there's some
indication that the rate of improvement is slowing: since 1996 we've increased
from 73.3 cents to 77.8 cents, just over a third of a penny each year. The Lilly
Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was a great start that restored some lost ground, and now
we have the momentum to begin actually moving forward! We're working to close
the loopholes in the Equal Pay Act by supporting passage of the Paycheck
Fairness Act.”
